Scoutmaster Minute: Some busy times on our hands with Eagle projects, Eagle Court of Honor, campouts, leadership transition and training over the next few weeks. Be Prepared is our motto for a reason. To that point, I need to thank the folks involved in reconstructing the Troop Trailer…very excited about the new setup…Jim Lakie for helping with design, CJ Staton for helping to gut the old trailer and building the new shelving and Paul Taylor for working with me to make some adaptations to get the new setup built out this past week. Still a few things to be done, but everything has a home and should make it easier for the Scouts to access the gear they need. I will not be here this week, but Mr. Lakie will be running point Tuesday and ASM Wilson will be point during the Horsemanship Campout. Have a great week Troop 893.
It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.

RANK ADVANCEMENT

IMPORTANT ACTION ITEMS

A. Horsemanship Campout September 17-19

## URGENT – Need a driver to transport Troop Trailer and a grubmaster for Big Dogz.
B. Mountain Man Rendezvous Camporee, October 8-10
We attended this event 2 years ago and it was a really awesome experience for all scouts and adults involved!
Group size is limited so we need an idea of who is going ASAP, final cutoff will be Tuesday, Sept 28 at midnight.
## Brian Schultz will tow Troop Trailer, but we still need a grubmaster for Big Dogz.

C. Order of the Arrow – Fall Candidate Ordeal, October 22-24

Multiple Scouts were elected by their peers to become candidates for the Order of the Arrow. This outing is a key step in fulfilling your commitment to OA and moving towards Brotherhood.Details will be forthcoming.
Candidates should notify me and Mr. Wilson on intent to participate.

MEETINGS
Remember that the Patrol assigned to run a meeting also has clean up duty….meaning your Patrol should be the last to leave with approval of SPL and Scoutmaster.

1. This Week Sept 14: Scout Jeopardy & Campout Shakedown (Phoenix)
Uniform Class B (Class A if seeking advancement)

A. Horsemanship Campout Final Shakedown – Scouts attending the campout should bring $15 and each grub group will finalize meal plans. ALL meal plans must be reviewed by APL and ASM Wilson before moving on to the rest of the evening’s meeting activities. Also need a clear count on Scouts that will need a Troop tent.
B. Scout Jeopardy – Be prepared for some laughs and challenges as the Phoenix patrol runs a Scout Jeopardy meeting. Patrols will compete across multiple categories just like the TV show, but Darius is a better host.

2. Later This Week Sept 17-19: Horsemanship Campout

All Scouts attending this campout should plan to arrive in the parking lot of CUMC on Friday evening no later than 6pm. Here are some critical action items:
  1. Permission slip, printed and signed is required for ALL scouts. No Exceptions. Turn in to SPL Friday evening.
  2. Class A uniform to travel to/from campout. No Exceptions.
  3. Eat dinner before coming Friday evening.
  4. Pack Long Pants – trust me you don’t want to ride a horse in shorts!
  5. Parents should be prepared to drive Scouts to the campout.
  6. Review requirements for Horsemanship MB
## URGENT – We still need someone to transport Troop Trailer to/from campsite, does not require camping.

3. Next Week Sept 21: Leadership/Steal the Bacon/Preshakedown (Land Sharks)
Uniform Class A

Leadership
A. Senior Patrol Leader Candidates: All scouts interested in running for election as the next Senior Patrol Leader should contact Mr. Morley no later than the 14 August Troop meeting. Candidates must be the rank of Life or higher and be in 9th to 12th grade. Mr. Morley will schedule a time to meet with you, or call, to discuss your goals and ambitions as SPL. The time period for this leadership position is from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. You must be present to be elected.

B. Patrol Leader: All patrols should prepare for Patrol Leader elections. Scouts interested in running for Patrol Leader for their patrols should discuss their desire with their patrol members. There should be no consecutive terms.

C. Troop Positions of Responsibility: Scouts interested in serving in other positions of responsibility should review the attached Position Guide for information on the various positions available and associated responsibilities. Actively supporting the Troop through a leadership position is required to complete the ranks of Star, Life and Eagle. If a Scout is unable to attend, please advise Mr. Morley of your interest by email.

All scouts elected or appointed to a position of responsibility for the Fall term are required to attend the Junior Leadership Training (JLT) on October 3 at the CUMC Activity Field.

Steal the Bacon/Preshakedown
Landsharks will have an activity called Steal the Bacon…not sure what that means just yet, but stealing bacon off my breakfast plate is a dangerous decision.
Scouts will also work together to start thinking about the Mountain Man Rendezvous Campout. This includes review of the various stations that will be the basis of patrol level competitions. Please register your intent to attend so we know how to organize patrols.
