Scoutmaster Minute: Given we will blessed with copious amounts of rain this week, a reminder that much about life can be learned from Noah’s Ark:
- Don’t miss the boat.
- Remember we’re all in the same boat.
- Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.
- Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
- Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
- Build your future on high ground.
- Use the buddy system.
- Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
- When you’re stressed, float a while.
- Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
Rank Advancement
- Luke Carballosa -First Class (9/4/18)
Note: All Scouts seeking recognition of rank advancement or merit badges at the October 2nd Court of Honor should complete all paperwork, conferences, boards of review by Tuesday, Sept 11.
- 1. This Week Sept 11 – Knot Safety/Shakedown (Panda)
Uniform – Class A
- The Panda patrol is planning to review and teach critical knot safety, especially those associated with climbing. Scout will have the opportunity to work towards various requirements of the climbing merit badge. Even if not climbing, these knots and skills are important for all types of outing and related activities. This meeting will also serve as the final shakedown for the Sept 14-16 campout. That means grubmasters, duty rosters and tentmates will be finalized. This will be a backpack style campout meaning all meals will be cooked on backpacking stoves/JetBoils. Bring $15 for the grubmaster.
- WE ARE MONITIORING THE WEATHER CLOSELY AND CONSIDERING ALTERNATIVES SINCE WE MAY BE UNABLE TO SAFELY CLIMB. ALL SHOULD PLAN THAT SOMETHING WILL BE HAPPENING.
The Marsden Tract campsite is approximately 3/4 miles from the parking area just off the C&O Canal near Carderock and I do not anticipate that we will bring the Troop trailer on this outing. That means think hard about what and how you will carry your gear to/from the site. If it cannot be carried then you probably don’t need it. Patrols/Grubmasters should also plan accordingly…think really really hard about anything that requires ice. Scouts should review the attached and links below for meal planning ideas. Yes we will be using one or more bear bags, to store food when not in use…food should NEVER be in tents…no exceptions.

- Breakfast example – 1 Ziploc sandwich bag/person, 1/2cup old fashion oatmeal, 1/2tsp powered milk, raisins or brown sugar. Cheap and easy, just add hot water.
ATTN: Please review the following items and Be Prepared.

- Tuesday, Sept 11 – Bring $15 for your grubmaster.
- Friday, Sept 14 – Troop Permission Slip is given by the Scout to the SPL or Acting SPL for purposes of attendance confirmation.
- Next Week Sept 18 – TBD (Eagles)
Uniform – Class A
The Eagle Patrol is developing a plan to engage fellow Scouts in an activity that could be a lifesaver.
- 3. Troop Fundraiser
Each Scout family will be receiving a packet of information providing guidance for our Troop Fundraising activity.
Our Scouts will be selling popcorn to support various Troop activities and resources, such as maintenance of the troop trailer, awards, camping fees, and troop equipment – tents, stoves, climbing gear etc.
- Support Scouting
Pack 1858 needs a couple of scouts to help with Join Scouting Night on Wednesday the 12th. Ideally this would Troop Guides or former Pack 1858 scouts that can help promote Troop 893 among the current Webelos and AOL scouts. The pack’s crossover ceremony was rained out last spring and we will be doing the cross over while also welcoming new scouts. We will have some activities planned for the new cub scouts, we just need a couple of boy scouts to help manage them.
