Troop News – June 9 2019

Scoutmaster Minute The 893 summer camp shakedown happened this week, all campers going to Camp Olmsted turned in paperwork, chose bus seat mates and tent mates.  We discussed some summer camp packing list items and tips for packing.  Not discussed was the most important thing to pack: a sense of adventure.  For some scouts this is the first time going away for a week of camp.  Or maybe in sleeping on a cot.  There will be new experiences, new skills to learn, new foods to try, new friends to meet.  Jump in with both feet and enjoy the opportunity of [...]

Troop News – 2 June 2019

Scoutmaster minute We had a great planning session this week and set out ideas on what to do for meetings and activities through the summer.  While there are plans for continued achievements to meet rank and work on merit badge I’m pleased to see some fun, for the sake of fun, also worked into the plan. The troop has been working hard and attaining much in a short period, life should have a balance of work and progress as well as enjoying what has been earned with those you care for.   All work and no play doesn’t just make [...]

Troop News – May 27 2019

Scoutmaster Minute This weekend was the 46th Annual 893 Family Camping Canoe Trip, and we had near perfect weather.  Some members of the troop had been before as siblings, this marked the first time that the 893 Girls Troop took part as members of a troop.  The girls had a great showing, and clearly got into the spirit of defending against “river pirates”.   This weekend marks the start of the summer season activities, pools open and we know that school’s last day is that much closer.  But the true significance of this weekend is not open pools and picnics. [...]

Troop News – May-19-2019

Scoutmaster Minute Getting out into Nature, seeing some history and enjoying fellowship of other Scouts are some of the reasons why we are active in this program.  This week we walked over five miles across the Manassas Battlefield along “Blue Trail” dotted with historic canon, fences, and buildings; spotting all kinds of signs of animals and plants along the way.  We saw evidence of deer, dogs, raccoons, snakes, turtles and more.  We identified honeysuckle, white clover, sycamore tree, and many more plants.  Scouts navigated our path and made sure we arrived at our planned end point.  The ability to find [...]

Troop News – May-13-2019

Scoutmaster Minute Today is the official, formal, day to celebrate the moms in our life.  The moms who help with scraped knees, nudge along in projects, give encouragement when needed and a firm guiding hand when also needed.  Who help sew on uniform patches, help you shop for needed scout gear, get you to your events when you need to be there.  Celebrate the mom in your life everyday with a hug back, help around the house and asking how her day has been. Next week - 5/14 - Troop Meeting (8-9pm) Uniform: Class A (tan shirt) Location: CUMC chapel Hiking Trip final [...]

Troop News- 6-May-2019

Scoutmaster Minute Planning some key dates for activities and campouts was a key accomplishment from this week’s PLC, and marks another milestone as the scouts do more to plan troop activities. These dates have been entered into the troop calendar in TroopMaster, details will come as the troop plans them.  Today’s visit to the pool was a big success with all scouts passing the Second Class requirements in the pool for the swim test and simple rescue techniques.  Swimming has been part of Scouting from the start of the program and the 893GT scouts are keeping with this tradition. [...]

Troop News – 27-April-2019

Scoutmaster Minute There is great joy in seeing a troop come together at a team.  This weekend our first troop campout was a success by all counts with scouts selecting a tent site, assisting each other with tent set up, cooking and eating as a patrol in the sun (and wind), providing service to our hosts, learning navigation and other skills.  Between the Girls Troop and Boys Troop twelve different Boards of Review were held.  Many thanks to all the adults from both troops in supporting so many BoRs for the Scouts!   The open air is the real objective [...]

Troop News – 21 April 2019

Scoutmaster Minute   I hope everyone has been able to enjoy some down time away from school and other regular activities during the Spring Break.  Perhaps you were able to do some traveling or visit with family, especially with both Easter and Passover holidays celebrated this weekend.   Rest when you're weary. Refresh and renew yourself, your body, your mind, your spirit. Then get back to work.      - Ralph Marston   This week - 4/23 - Troop Meeting (8-9pm) Uniform: Class A (tan shirt) Location: CUMC chapel   Campout final prep: follow up on shakedown.  Grubmaster menu approvals and food money [...]

Troop News – 15-April-2019

Scoutmaster Minute This week focused on preparation for our first campout experience. By preparing well beforehand we ensure we are ready for what faces us during the activity.  While I missed this meeting due to work travel, reports are that it went well and that the Historian and Webmaster met to learn about the website before the meeting.   A Scout is never taken by surprise; he knows exactly what to do when anything unexpected happens.      - Lord Baden-Powell   Photos of the Week New Scout Camp out Shakedown     Rank Advancements Scouts who earned rank this [...]

Troop News – 7 April 2019

Scoutmaster Minute A Scout is Clean. Yesterday youth and adult members of both the the 893 boys troop and girls troop participated in the annual CUMC Spring Cleanup.  We cleared out underbrush, cleared out along the curb of the road leading into the church, and swept both the sidewalk and curb area clear.  After many wheelbarrow loads to the activity field and a couple of truck loads to the dump we got the area looking neat again.  Well done scouts!   Try and leave this world a little better than you found it, and when your turn comes to die, [...]
