Troop News – 27-April-2019

Scoutmaster Minute There is great joy in seeing a troop come together at a team.  This weekend our first troop campout was a success by all counts with scouts selecting a tent site, assisting each other with tent set up, cooking and eating as a patrol in the sun (and wind), providing service to our hosts, learning navigation and other skills.  Between the Girls Troop and Boys Troop twelve different Boards of Review were held.  Many thanks to all the adults from both troops in supporting so many BoRs for the Scouts!   The open air is the real objective [...]

Troop News – 21 April 2019

Scoutmaster Minute   I hope everyone has been able to enjoy some down time away from school and other regular activities during the Spring Break.  Perhaps you were able to do some traveling or visit with family, especially with both Easter and Passover holidays celebrated this weekend.   Rest when you're weary. Refresh and renew yourself, your body, your mind, your spirit. Then get back to work.      - Ralph Marston   This week - 4/23 - Troop Meeting (8-9pm) Uniform: Class A (tan shirt) Location: CUMC chapel   Campout final prep: follow up on shakedown.  Grubmaster menu approvals and food money [...]

Troop News – 15-April-2019

Scoutmaster Minute This week focused on preparation for our first campout experience. By preparing well beforehand we ensure we are ready for what faces us during the activity.  While I missed this meeting due to work travel, reports are that it went well and that the Historian and Webmaster met to learn about the website before the meeting.   A Scout is never taken by surprise; he knows exactly what to do when anything unexpected happens.      - Lord Baden-Powell   Photos of the Week New Scout Camp out Shakedown     Rank Advancements Scouts who earned rank this [...]

Troop News – 7 April 2019

Scoutmaster Minute A Scout is Clean. Yesterday youth and adult members of both the the 893 boys troop and girls troop participated in the annual CUMC Spring Cleanup.  We cleared out underbrush, cleared out along the curb of the road leading into the church, and swept both the sidewalk and curb area clear.  After many wheelbarrow loads to the activity field and a couple of truck loads to the dump we got the area looking neat again.  Well done scouts!   Try and leave this world a little better than you found it, and when your turn comes to die, [...]

Troop News — 1-April-2019

Scoutmaster Minute This week marked the formal installation of our first Troop Leadership team.  Scouts elected into positions earlier in March are now sworn in and off to a great start.  As we contemplate these new leaders and support their coming plans, contemplate a quote from Walt Disney, the man behind The Happiest Place on Earth, “Imagineers”, and more.  He was once asked what a person would need to be like him.  Disney named four steps: Think! Think about the values and principles that guide you in your business and personal life. Believe! Believe in yourself. Dream! Dream of something [...]

Troop News — 24-March-2019

Scoutmaster Minute Saturday was our first Outdoor Skills Day where scouts entered the Ax Yard for the first time and learned to safely handle sharp tools.  They then used those skills to acquire a dead tree and turn it into a flagpole with some knots skills.  The scouts prepared lunch of tasty quesadillas and then used the 3-pot method to clean up after.  The day wrapped up with fire skills, dump cake they made and a campfire program after dinner.  That is what was on the agenda - what they really did was work as a team to achieve a [...]

Troop News — 19-March-2019

Scoutmaster Minute This week we held the first elections for the troop and selected all positions. This is a step in the right direction as a Scout-led troop.  I am sure all our new leaders will serve with distinction in support of the troop, and should know that all members of the troop are involved to provide support. The patrol system leads each boy to see that he has some individual responsibility for the good of his patrol.     - Lord Baden-Powell Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.    - John F. Kennedy Photos of the Week [...]

Troop News — 10-March-2019

Scoutmaster Minute This past Friday was International Women’s Day, a day where the achievement of women as leaders, inventors, pioneers and more are celebrated. As this new troop enters its second month I place all of you firmly under the category of pioneers and leaders not just among women but within our Community in general. Continue to stretch, grow, and be inspired. We do not need Magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. - J. K. Rowling, author   Photos of the Week Some pictures taken from yesterday’s Art Merit Badge participant field [...]

Troop News — 3-March-2019

Scoutmaster Moment This has been quite the busy week!  Member of the troop participated in our first AoL Crossover ceremony. Our single patrol has chosen a name and patrol patch - all hail the Rascal Rabbit Patrol!  They have developed a patrol yell and have a design for a (super cool) patrol flag.  I cannot wait to see it go from paper to flag pole! Troopmaster calendar has been getting populated, we will have a session at an upcoming meeting (TBD) to go over various features that should be used.  I recommend subscribing to the calendar for automatic updates on [...]

Troop News — 24-Febuary-2019

Scoutmaster Minute This Friday was the 162nd birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting Movement. Today was the final day of Troop 893's 2019 Merit Badge University, the first in which girls as members of a US troop were able to participate in and now bring “BP’s” vision to everyone.  Every scout in the Girls Troop attended at least one badge offering this year.  Well done! This week - 2/26 - Troop Meeting (8-9pm) Uniform: Class A (tan shirt) Location: CUMC Knot Relay game, Cyberchip presentation together to the troop (by girls grades 6 and up), knife safety discussion, [...]
