Troop News – 7 July 2019
Scoutmaster Moment This week the troop embarked upon the Astronomy Merit Badge, with many thanks to ASM Adam Weisz for showing the way and his tools. The weather was stormy and therefore the stars were blocked from our view, but they’ll return. A star watching evening will be planned for later this Fall when the skies are usually a bit more helpful (darker earlier, and clearer with the cool weather). The heavens have captured humanity’s imagination for centuries with some cultures having origin stories that involve the stars, to physicists challenging status quo based upon their observations of celestial bodies, to geopolitics [...]

Scoutmaster Minute This week was the troop’s first time at summer camp, a week of many Firsts. The first time Goshen Scout Reservation has hosted girls as troops and as members of cub scout packs. Troop 893 was the first Girl Troop at Olmsted perform a flag ceremony with some help from other female staffers, and performed well after taking time out of free time to practice using three flag poles raising three of the flags representing our Council. In 1 week, the 4 girls completed 19 merit badges (10 different) and were one of 4 different troops to have [...]

Scoutmaster Minute I have two thoughts for this week, as today is Father’s Day. Many thanks to all the Dads in the Troop and those who have supported those of us in the troop! Without your guidance, support, staying up with homework, helping with campout prep, being at games, recitals, and the other innumerable ways Dads help kids of all ages our efforts would be so much harder. Be sure to give your Dad an extra hug, and remember to thank him on other days throughout the year too. This week will mark the official, astronomical, start of Summer [...]

Scoutmaster Minute The 893 summer camp shakedown happened this week, all campers going to Camp Olmsted turned in paperwork, chose bus seat mates and tent mates. We discussed some summer camp packing list items and tips for packing. Not discussed was the most important thing to pack: a sense of adventure. For some scouts this is the first time going away for a week of camp. Or maybe in sleeping on a cot. There will be new experiences, new skills to learn, new foods to try, new friends to meet. Jump in with both feet and enjoy the opportunity of [...]
Troop News – 2 June 2019
Scoutmaster minute We had a great planning session this week and set out ideas on what to do for meetings and activities through the summer. While there are plans for continued achievements to meet rank and work on merit badge I’m pleased to see some fun, for the sake of fun, also worked into the plan. The troop has been working hard and attaining much in a short period, life should have a balance of work and progress as well as enjoying what has been earned with those you care for. All work and no play doesn’t just make [...]
Troop News – May 27 2019
Scoutmaster Minute This weekend was the 46th Annual 893 Family Camping Canoe Trip, and we had near perfect weather. Some members of the troop had been before as siblings, this marked the first time that the 893 Girls Troop took part as members of a troop. The girls had a great showing, and clearly got into the spirit of defending against “river pirates”. This weekend marks the start of the summer season activities, pools open and we know that school’s last day is that much closer. But the true significance of this weekend is not open pools and picnics. [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Getting out into Nature, seeing some history and enjoying fellowship of other Scouts are some of the reasons why we are active in this program. This week we walked over five miles across the Manassas Battlefield along “Blue Trail” dotted with historic canon, fences, and buildings; spotting all kinds of signs of animals and plants along the way. We saw evidence of deer, dogs, raccoons, snakes, turtles and more. We identified honeysuckle, white clover, sycamore tree, and many more plants. Scouts navigated our path and made sure we arrived at our planned end point. The ability to find [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Today is the official, formal, day to celebrate the moms in our life. The moms who help with scraped knees, nudge along in projects, give encouragement when needed and a firm guiding hand when also needed. Who help sew on uniform patches, help you shop for needed scout gear, get you to your events when you need to be there. Celebrate the mom in your life everyday with a hug back, help around the house and asking how her day has been. Next week - 5/14 - Troop Meeting (8-9pm) Uniform: Class A (tan shirt) Location: CUMC chapel Hiking Trip final [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Planning some key dates for activities and campouts was a key accomplishment from this week’s PLC, and marks another milestone as the scouts do more to plan troop activities. These dates have been entered into the troop calendar in TroopMaster, details will come as the troop plans them. Today’s visit to the pool was a big success with all scouts passing the Second Class requirements in the pool for the swim test and simple rescue techniques. Swimming has been part of Scouting from the start of the program and the 893GT scouts are keeping with this tradition. [...]
