Scoutmaster Minute: Time is a funny thing...sometimes it cannot go by fast enough and other times insanely fast. Twelve years ago I became an adult leader in Pack 127 and eventually I was the Cubmaster. During the Join Scouting sessions I would often take out a rope that measured 80 inches, roughly equal to the time span of the average male. The Cubs started in 1st grade as Tigers, 6 or 7 years old, so I would remove the first 6 inches since that time had already passed. I would then cut the rope at the 18 inch mark since that represented what was beyond [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Game time fellas, need better picture of who is going to the campout this weekend. That include adults...so far its just me which is simply not gonna work. Please use the SignUp link below. This is a great outing and the weather is looking favorable. That said if you plan to attend...you will not depart CUMC on Friday without proper rain gear...meaning visual inspection. Carry as little as possible, but choose that little with care. - Earl Shaffer MEETINGS Reminder that the Patrol assigned to run a meeting also has clean up duty....meaning your Patrol should be the last to [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: The Troop 893 Scouters have yet again demonstrated their heartiness and were undeterred by rain for the 48th run on the Shenandoah River with Downriver Canoe Company. Looking forward to hearing all the stories that I am certain will be shared for years to come. As May comes to a close, we start the final preparations for summer camp which will occupy much of out time in the next few weeks. Please be sure to read those communications and complete ALL necessary paperwork by this Tuesday. Doing so helps us ensure that the boys have a great experience. [...]

Kevin Morley Sun, Mar 21, 7:27 PM (2 days ago) to members.troop893 Scoutmaster Minute: Excellent day at the activity field with the new leadership team led by SPL Brian Staton. ASPL Programs Griffin Smith worked with former SPL Mikey Hannett in developing a soild workplan for the next few months. They are ready to go with some great ideas and plans. We did discuss servant leadership and with that in mind I am grateful for the support from our adult leaders - Jim Lakie, Paul, Taylor, Shawn Morrow, Chris Wilson, Kathy Tyalor, Brian Schultz and Elana Taylor. Looking back at the [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Exactly one year ago we dropped in the unknown void of COVID chaos, no classes, no meetings, no campouts. As a Troop we endured, adapted and pivoted to sustain our program. Meetings resumed online and in-person, we held several campouts, and multiple outings that collectively generated some great progress and experiences. Last week our Scouts selected a new Senior Parol Leader, Brian Staton, and Patrol Leaders, plus many volunteered to service in various positions of responsibility. These Scouts will official take over on April 1 (no joke) after attending leadership training on March 21. Our success will continue [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: I am looking forward to seeing everyone this week, expecially since the weather is looking favorable. It will still be dark, so make sure you have your headlamps/flashlights. This first meeting will be busy with various leadership elections, so we need everyone to fall in line quickly and follow COVID protocols as we have the past several month...nothing new there. The leader has to be practical and a realist, yet must talk the language of the visionary and the idealist. —Eric Hoffer IMPORTANT ITEMS Summer Camp: We really need folks to make there intent to participate in summer [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: For the record...the Troop 893 family is Simply the Best. I very much enjoyed seeing all the Scouts participating in the Merit Badge University the past few weeks. Equally important is the gratifude for the leaders that share their time and knowledge to run the classes and sit on several Boards of Review. Hard works is rewarded with sucess and many of you either completed or made significant progress on multiple merit badges. Well done. I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: The Bird Study/Weather merit badge outing was great. The sun was out and multiple bird species were sighted, including this beauty photographed by Mr, Barretto. Take a close look at the talons...take out meal. For those unable to attend, I would encourage you to take a stroll at Neabasco Park when the weather is perhaps a bit warmer and the board walk is open. Beautiful palce to get up close to nature. The next few weeks will be busy with the continuation of merit badge university (get homework done) and preparing to bring new scouts into the Troop. [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Okay we had a great response to merit badge university, so use the next 2 weeks wisely and fill in the gaps. Hard work is rewarded in many ways, first and foremost in your own mind with the knowledge that you can, and second outwardly by earning a merit badge that will keep you moving forward on that journey to Eagle. Putting off an easy thing makes it hard. Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible. — George Claude Lorimer Rank Advancement Joseph Barnett - Life (2/14/21) Christopher Richmond - Star (2/14/21) IMPORTANT ITEMS Summer Camp: Please review [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Super Bowl Sunday...The GOAT or The Kid. Who will prevail...only time will tell. I just want to see a good game, and leaning a bit towards Tampa on the principal that old dogs can sill hunt. In terms of Scouting, its looks like MBU is shaping up great and lots of solid work being done on Eagle MBs. We also have multiple scouts working on Bird Study and this wekk covering Weather, plus an outing next Saturday. Advancements are continuing and as a Unit we doing out best under the current conditions to keep moving forward with programs [...]
