Scoutmaster Minute: April showers spring rank advancements and new experiences. By all accounts Troop 893's new scout campout provided multiple learning opportunities of all types, including why we should always pack our rain gear no matter what. The floating flag pole was put to great use, the fish were biting, many enjoyed a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, the campfire program prepared by the Communications MB crew during which we retired several US flags that had fulfilled their duty. The morning brought a little drizzle to make breakdown even more fun...but it all worked out. Special thanks to Adults that drove Scouts [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Leadership is transitional and constantly evolving. Today, the Troop's new leadership endured gusty winds and little rain while making great strides in setting a vision for the next six months. This included the first official use of the CUMC Activity Field flag pole planned and installed by Benjamin Powers for his Eagle project. Awesome. The Scouts benefitted from some excellent peer leadership provided by Hiroki Cook, Jacob Major, Matthew Sezen, Jonathan Lee, Henry Jobe and Benjamin Powers. These young men are ready to take the lead which officially commences at the Court of Honor on Tuesday evening...look forward [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Endure, persevere, excel and overcome are all thoughts that come to mind after this weekend. A hearty combination of Scouters took on mother nature in the Elizabeth Furnace area of George Washington National Forest this weekend. Everyone hiked at least 7 miles or more, gaining at least 1200ft in elevation, and some climbed with ropes while others did rock scrambles. All in all it was a great weekend with good spirits and warm fires...which was especially nice given the overnight low hit 25F. By and large all were well fed, and I suspect some Scouts are due for [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: It is always impressive what can be accomplished when we work collectively toward a shared mission. The meeting this past week demonstrated teamwork and the potential for a very useful camp gadget that could be used during the campout this weekend. On this upcoming outing I think there may be moments that challenge us in different ways depending on the goals set. The key is to set the goal and move ahead....you cannot finish if you never start. I always get to where I’m going by walking away from where I have been. – Winnie the Pooh Rank [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: I strongly encouraged all Scouts to consider how best they can take on a leadership position and push their potential...no leader is perfect and learning never happens without trying. The following Scouts stepped forward to "take the risk" and help lead their peers for the next 6 months. We will induct them into their new positions of service to the Troop at the Court of Honor on April 2. Scoutmaster Minute: We completed another successful Merit Badge University under the excellent guidance of Matt Conner, our gracious hosts Paul and Kathy Taylor, and many Merit Badge Counselors. Last week during the Patrol Leadership Council (PLC) the team crafted a solid activities plan through mid-April, which will give the new Leadership team time to catch-up and grab the reigns of responsibility come April 1. I strongly encourage all Scouts to consider how best they can take on a leadership position to push their potential...no leader is perfect and learning never happens without trying...take the "risk". Don't be too timid and [...]
