Scoutmaster Minute: Sobering times for sure, but that does not make us helpless. If we are Obedient and abide by the actions public health officials recommend for social distancing we can mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on our communities and save lives. That means we must not act in our own self interest but collectively for the benefit of our families, friends and neighbors. There will be no Troop meetings thru March 27, at which time leadership will adjust per the plans I outlined yesterday. We are evaluating options for holding some virtual meetings to support merit badges and other [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Yesterday morning I explored the Diamond Head Crater outside of Honolulu and made sure that Troop 893 was represented. One of the unique things I got to see on that hike was a helicopter extraction from the top of the crater (sadly someone took a bad fall), example of the Search & Rescue Merit Badge in action. During the week I also had the honor of visiting with Governor Ige and the leadership of INDOPACOM to discuss resilience and preparedness for the islands and our national security interests. This command post covers 52% of globe and multiple bad [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Today we wrapped up another successful Merit Badge University with lots of energy and motivation. Thank you to all the Merit Badge Counselors for the time and effort in helping our Scouts grow, ASM Matt Conner for organizing everyone and The Taylor's for the generous meeting space. Scoutmaster Minute: Fun day with the Daytona 500 happening and President Trump taking a pace lap to lead the field as we celebrate President's Day tomorrow. Personally I am pulling for #24 William Byron...Eagle Scout! Lots of goals being set today, so hope that our Scouts are setting their sights on the next stage in their journey which includes putting their name in for a position of responsibility at the March 3 meeting. Have a look at the attach Troop Position Guide if your not sure. The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Today was a great start to our annual Merit Badge University. AND a day like this has not happened for over 900 years (11/11/1111) and will not happen again until 12/12/2121. More specifically, 02/02/2020 is called a palindrome, meaning it reads the same forwards and backwards. I am so glad I was able to share this unique day will my fellow Scouters....perhaps some of you will be there to enjoy it 101 years from now. Who knows what the future will bring, but hopefully Eagle is part of that plan. Many of you are very close and taking [...]

Scoutmaster Minute GRIT = passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals. This is a trait that the Scouting journey seeking to instill in our young people. It is easy to be distracted by electronics and social media that offer instant gratification misdirect us from seeing the big picture. The quick, small and meaningless "rewards" from a game or SnapChat preys on our basic social desire for acceptance and 'the win". Spending hours leveling up on an Xbox game will not help you finish that English paper or be more prepared for a sporting competition. There is plenty of time for [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Neither snow nor rain nor [mud] nor gloom of night stays these [Scouts] from the swift completion of their [Klondike Derby]. What a great weekend. Based on boys attitude and spirit you would never know we had some cruddy weather on Saturday. It may have has a little to with pied pipers (Mikey and Bryan) who were impressive with their skills on the recorder....yes that flute like device we have all shucked out money for in grade school. Big thank you to the Scouts that came out for the day to help run the Troop Station, which I think I think went very [...]

Scoutmaster Minute 2020 is like 2019 since our first meeting of the new year was cancelled again. The few flakes of snow that fell seemed to be too much for the NoVa area to handle. As a kid, I had one of the biggest newspaper delivery routes in town. The elementary school was at the end of my street, so if the street was not plowed by the time I finished, I knew it was safe to crawl back into bed. Typically the only tracks on my street those mornings were from the guy who brought the papers. If he [...]
