Scoutmaster Minute: Today we wrapped up another successful Merit Badge University with lots of energy and motivation. Thank you to all the Merit Badge Counselors for the time and effort in helping our Scouts grow, ASM Matt Conner for organizing everyone and The Taylor's for the generous meeting space. On Friday evening, we had the honor of receiving 2 newly minted Arrow of Light Scouts from Pack 127 with a bit of sibling support. We look for to having all of our new Scouts join the Nova Corp Patrol in the coming weeks. Over the next week Scouts should be thinking [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Fun day with the Daytona 500 happening and President Trump taking a pace lap to lead the field as we celebrate President's Day tomorrow. Personally I am pulling for #24 William Byron...Eagle Scout! Lots of goals being set today, so hope that our Scouts are setting their sights on the next stage in their journey which includes putting their name in for a position of responsibility at the March 3 meeting. Have a look at the attach Troop Position Guide if your not sure. The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Leadership is a key element of Scouting, especially as a Scout seeks to complete the ranks of Star, Life and Eagle. On March 3, we will begin the process of transitioning to the Spring 2020 term by electing a new Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leaders. All those planning to run for SPL should see me at the next meeting. All Scouts are encouraged to consider several positions of responsibility that they would like to full in support of the Troop from April 1- October 1 and be prepared to signup on March 3. Scoutmaster Minute Today was a great start to our annual Merit Badge University. AND a day like this has not happened for over 900 years (11/11/1111) and will not happen again until 12/12/2121. More specifically, 02/02/2020 is called a palindrome, meaning it reads the same forwards and backwards. I am so glad I was able to share this unique day will my fellow Scouters....perhaps some of you will be there to enjoy it 101 years from now. Who knows what the future will bring, but hopefully Eagle is part of that plan. Many of you are very close and taking [...]

Scoutmaster Minute GRIT = passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals. This is a trait that the Scouting journey seeking to instill in our young people. It is easy to be distracted by electronics and social media that offer instant gratification misdirect us from seeing the big picture. The quick, small and meaningless "rewards" from a game or SnapChat preys on our basic social desire for acceptance and 'the win". Spending hours leveling up on an Xbox game will not help you finish that English paper or be more prepared for a sporting competition. There is plenty of time for [...]

Scoutmaster Minute Neither snow nor rain nor [mud] nor gloom of night stays these [Scouts] from the swift completion of their [Klondike Derby]. What a great weekend. Based on boys attitude and spirit you would never know we had some cruddy weather on Saturday. It may have has a little to with pied pipers (Mikey and Bryan) who were impressive with their skills on the recorder....yes that flute like device we have all shucked out money for in grade school. Big thank you to the Scouts that came out for the day to help run the Troop Station, which I think I think went very [...]

Scoutmaster Minute 2020 is like 2019 since our first meeting of the new year was cancelled again. The few flakes of snow that fell seemed to be too much for the NoVa area to handle. As a kid, I had one of the biggest newspaper delivery routes in town. The elementary school was at the end of my street, so if the street was not plowed by the time I finished, I knew it was safe to crawl back into bed. Typically the only tracks on my street those mornings were from the guy who brought the papers. If he [...]

Scoutmaster Minute: Welcome to 2020. Hard for me to reconcile with the fact that I rekindled my relationship with Scouting just over 10 years ago...wow. Highlights included marching in the 100 year anniversary parade, being a Tiger Den Leader and then Cubmaster for Pack 127, a most incredible adventure to Philmont with the awesome Crew of 728 Charlie, and becoming Scoutmaster for "Simply The Best" Troop of Scouters. Life is full of surprises and opportunities, but they will not fall into your lap wandering through life. Continuing forward on the Trail to Eagle will help you discover the potential you [...]

Scoutmaster Minute We had an huge fun last evening at Vertical Rock climbing center...clearly some of these Scouts are part spider monkey. They were exposed to the basic fundamentals of the Climbing MB and I received several requests for blue cards. A session or two here may be on a few wish lists. This certainly put a few Scouts outside their comfort zone, especially on the 50 foot wall, but they prevailed and great time into the wee hours of the morning, multiple requests to come back again. Success and happiness require engagement. You can't cross the sea merely [...]
