Scoutmaster Minute: The first Troop News I sent was October 1, 2017. By my estimate this is approximately edition #250 and also my last as your Scoutmaster.  Simple put it has been an honor and privilage to guide with these young men on thier Scouting journey and life in general. Until we meet on Tuseday, here are a few thoughts:

Pathways act as an essential guiding force on this planet: on every scale of life,
from microscopic cells to herds of elephants, creatures can be found relying on trails
to reduce an overwhelming array of options to a single expeditious route.

Without trails, we would be lost.

Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.

A week of camp life is worth six months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room.

MEETINGS
  • The Patrol assigned to run a meeting also has clean up duty….meaning your Patrol should be the last to leave with approval of SPL and Scoutmaster.
  • Scouts seeking rank advancement should check with the Advancement Chair prior to requesting Scoutmaster Conference and be in Class A uniform.

1. This Week Mar 29- Spring Court of Honor (All Families)

A. The Troop 893 Spring Court of Honor will be held at Centreville United Methodist Church in the Sanctuary. The ceremony begins at 7:00 pm, so please plan accordingly. All Troop 893 scouts, families, and friends are invited and encouraged to attend. Scouts will be receiving Merit Badges, Rank Cards, and other recognitions that they have earned over the past 6 months. We will also recognize new members of Troop 893 and induct the new youth leadership for the next six month term.

B.  A small reception will follow with snacks and fellowship. For the reception, each family is asked to bring something to share as designated by last name, per below. When you leave, please plan to take anything that remains of what you brought.

    A – L:      Small dessert/snack
M – Z:     Beverage (one 2-liter bottle)

2. This Week April 2 – John Shen Eagle Project (All)
Uniform: Class B

Location: CUMC Activity Field

As announced at last week’s meeting, John Shen is seeking support for his Eagle Project on April 2 starting at 7am. All work will be at the CUMC Activity Field.

This is a great opportunity to earn service hours and for newer Scouts it will count as activity towards 1st class rank.
Scouts should wear work clothing (pants recommended), ideally scouts should also bring their own work gloves and eye protection since there are a limited number available. If you have pruning devices, bring them.
Principle tasks will include:
 – relocation of the entry gate, includes removal of existing posts
 – vegetation removal
 – install/create new entry walkway
3. Next Week April 5
  • No meeting until April 12, enjoy Spring Break.
4. Looking Ahead APR 24 – No Holds Barred Pinewood Derby
Uniform; Class A
Location: CUMC Activity Field

Plan ahead for some fun competition on April 24 with multiple classes of pinewood derby cars, tune up your old winner or build a new one. Lots of options, including the outlaw class.
NOTE: It is highly likely that we will have some knife and tomahawk throwing as boys activity if enough Scouts agree to participate.
