Scoutmaster Minute: The Troop 893 Scouters have yet again demonstrated their heartiness and were undeterred by rain for the 48th run on the Shenandoah River with Downriver Canoe Company. Looking forward to hearing all the stories that I am certain will be shared for years to come. As May comes to a close, we start the final preparations for summer camp which will occupy much of out time in the next few weeks. Please be sure to read those communications and complete ALL necessary paperwork by this Tuesday. Doing so helps us ensure that the boys have a great experience. I think its is safe to say we all enjoyed this weekend, in big and little ways. That enjoyment is possible due to the men and women that sacrificed everything to ensure our liberty and freedom. As part of our duty to country as Scouts, on Memorial Day take the time to pause, remember, reflect and honor the fallen that sacrificed everything.
America is the home of the free, because of the brave.

MEETINGS
Reminder that the Patrol assigned to run a meeting also has clean up duty….meaning your Patrol should be the last to leave with approval of SPL and Scoutmaster.
COVID NOTE: While the federal and state mask mandates are changing, Troop 893 will continue to follow protocols set by our charter organization. Please wear a mask to all events until notified otherwise.
1. This Week – 01 June: Summer Camp Shakedown Meeting
On Tuesday, June 1st we will have the annual summer camp shakedown. It will take the place of the regular Troop meeting from 7-8:30pm. The required attire is Class A for Scouts and Adults attending camp. It is much easier if both you and your scout attend the shakedown. If your scout will not be able to attend that evening, then you need to do it yourself, or send an adult substitute that has your permission to coordinate/sign on your behalf.
Physicals: All youth and adults attending camp must have full BSA medical form completed (A, B and C). No paperwork, no camp.
Swim Test: It is looking like the swim test will be held at Cub Run Rec Center on the afternoon of June 12th. Actual time will be posted ASAP, but read below and practice if you can before attending:
Swimmers test: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.
Beginners test: Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and swim 25 feet on the surface. Stop, turn sharply, resume swimming and return to the starting place.
Anyone who has not completed either the beginner or swimmer tests is classified as a nonswimmer.
2. Eagle Court of Honor – 06 June: Brian Staton 10:30am @CUMC Activity Field
Please join the Staton Family on Sunday, June 6 at 10:30am to celebrate Brian Staton’s achievement in reaching the rank of Eagle.
This is the first time in recent memory that a Scout has earned this rank while holding the position of Senior Patrol Leader.
All Scouters are welcome and for those younger Scouts that have not yet earned 1st Class, this event counts toward one of the 10 required activities.
