Scoutmaster Minute: Today marks 79 years since the attack on Peal Harbor. “December 7, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy,” President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously proclaimed. It brings to mind the actions taken by many young men and women in the follow days and weeks – duty to country. To be clear this commitement in the Scout Oath does not mean your expected to join the service, but rather it reflects of the selfless acts taken by the collective we to defend and promote our liberty and freedom. This includes a commitement to our fellow citizens, which as Scouts we most often fufill thru service projects like Scouting for Food and Eagle projects that better our community. It is also worthy to reflect on the meaning of the Scout Law that begins with “A Scout is…” Each part of the Law is there as a guiding princple for what we expect of ourselves and how we interact with fellow Scouts and the community in which we live. None of us are perfect in fulfilling these obligations, however if we each take time to reflect on how we can do our best, then I beleive you are taking the right steps in fulfilling your duty to country and the vision set forth by Lord Baden-Powell.
Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.

1.  This Week DEC 08: Bridging the Divide (Landsharks) @ Activity Field
Uniform – Class A
Teamwork, patience, and a clove hitch are key to getting over “troubled waters”. A pioneering mentality will do wonders for this patrol competition.
Might help to review pages 371-378….it’s always in the book. Even better if you actually bring the book.
2. Next Week DEC 15: Backpacking & 1st Aid (Eagles) @ Activity Field
Uniform – Class A
Eagles will be offering insight on safe practices for backpacking and hiking (see page 238-239).
This includes first aid skills that could be needed to help a fellow hiker. Good prep for the December 19 hike.
3. Hike DEC 19 @ Billy Goat Trail
Uniform – Class B
This is a great hike along the Potomac River with a great view of Great Falls. We will be covering Section A only which is about 4 miles round trip from the parking area.

The purpose is to provide a simple introduction to hiking and backpacking. Parents are encouraged to participate, but if not hiking must be back in time for pickup.
Here is a general schedule…return to the parking area is estimated and depends on pace and breaks for snacks/water.
All Scouts must have a mask, water, snack/lunch and daypack to carry their gear and signed permission slip.

1000: Arrive at parking area located at 11710 Macarthur Blvd, Potomac, MD 20854
