1. Next Meeting – 13 March: Backpacking Skills & Campout Shakedown (Land Sharks)
Uniform – Class A
ATTENTION – Scouts that joined Troop 893 last Spring, please remember to bring your red neckerchief to the meeting this week….it is time for a change.
Backpacking Skills: The Land Sharks will provide Scouts with an overview of how to properly pack a backpack, food/smellable storage, footwear and rain gear. They will also review options for meal planning based on the attached guide that can serve as example of options to consider for robust and hearty nutrition.
The Elizabeth Furnace campout March 16-18 will follow a backcountry format. That does not mean was are camping in the backcountry, but we will be practicing those skills for future outings. We will be camped within several 100 yards of the parking lot, so prospering packing is important, but no need to be prepared for long trek with all your gear. That being said proper gear is essential since we will be doing a 10-mile on Saturday to Buzzard Rock (~6hrs +/-) where Scouts will prepare a meal on the trail. For those working on various Rank requirements & MBs, this outing will including multiple cooking possibilities, the 10-mile hike and opportunities to apply orienteering and pioneering skills amongst others. The picture below will provide you with an idea of the site amenities.
Shakedown: Each Patrol will review plans for the up coming Elizabeth Furnace campout March 16-18 which will follow a backcountry format. That means Scouts will apply the cooking skills used during last weeks Backcountry Iron Chef meeting for all meals. Patrols should consult the attached idea Backpacking Meal Ideas (e.g., a loaf of bread does not travel well, but tortillas do great). Breakfast and Dinner will be in camp, lunch Saturday will be on the trail.
PERMISSION SLIP REQUIRED – ALL Scouts attending must complete the attached permission slip and turn it on FRIDAY evening before departing CUMC. No Scout will depart event without Scoutmasters permission. All will return to the VDOT Lot Sunday morning, ideally by 11:00 am at the latest. It approximately 1 hr drive from CUMC to the location where we are camping.

– Drivers will be needed to ensure all scouts
– Troop Trailer, while not essential on this campout, would be nice have volunteer with a hitch.
2. Summer Camp Registration & Merit Badge Selection
Registration for Summer Camp has begun and it is essential that Scouts and families review the information sent via email. Registration and payment is required to complete Merit Badge selection.

3. NCAC Orienteering Meet: March 24, Prince William Forrest
We would like to send representatives to this event in a few weeks, currently one 2 Scouts are registered, so would be great to have a few more to make this possible. This will be a day trip only activity, no camping. This event is great opportunity to learn and improve orienteering skills which is key element of 1st Class, multiple merit badges, high adventure (+++Philmont Crew+++) and is a core Scouting skill.
The cost will be $10 per Scout. We will need Adult support for transportation, but note that no Adults are allowed on the orienteering course. Please register your interest with the Troop ASAP so we can plan accordingly, we will then make reservation with NCAC.
4. Spring Cleanup at CUMC: March 17 & 24
Uniform – Class B
Each year Troop 893 provides service to Centreville United Methodist Church by assisting with their annual Spring Cleanup, where the grounds around the church receive some extra attention. This year the cleanup is being split over two Saturdays.
Please plan to support at least one of the following sessions:- March 17th, 8:00 am to 12:00. If you’re not attending the campout, please help with the cleanup!
– March 24th, 2:00pm to 6:00 pm. Max support please!Bring gloves, rakes, bow-saws, loppers, garden pruners/snippers. Also, any adults who can provide and operate a chain saw will be greatly appreciated.
