Scoutmaster Moment
This past week all of our scouts returned to their classrooms in their schools and we had our annual back to school picnic. I’m sure that in preparation for this there were new clothes purchased, school supplies obtained and more. The first week of school is often filled with some consternation with finding the right classroom, meeting new classmates and learning the best routes between classrooms. With this comes the need for some flexibility, adapting to new schools, learning from new teachers, meeting new classmates and group projects. All this is true for many aspects in life, new jobs, new neighborhoods, learning new routes, and being prepared for them with skills, supplies, and more. This week Hurricane Dorian is churning towards the Eastern Seaboard with many in Floriday spending this holiday weekend evacuating to shelters. As I write it is a Category 5 storm, the highest on our scale. Will it hit Florida? The Carolinas? How far inland will it come, and with what strength? As it turns out our troop will be working with the boys troop on Emergency Preparedness this week. A timely reminder to have a plan for a storm, be ready for loss of power and tree damage. Stocking up some food, water, full gas tank and cash on hand are good starts. There are two good sources of information for preparing for any emergency, to include hurricanes and winter storms:
The hope of a nation lies in the proper education of its youth.-ErasmusBy failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.-Benjamin Franklin
** I understand some weekly note recipients do not see information beyond this section, there is lots below. It may be email software issue, let me know if this applies to you **
This week – 9/3 – Troop Meeting
Uniform: Class A (tan shirt)
Location: CUMC chapel
This meeting will have two parts:
Part 1: Elections. Positions for next 6-month term will be filled. Positions above First Class have advancement requirements that include holding a position of responsibility to demonstrate leadership. As a small “young” troop we also have an opportunity for all registered scouts to hold a position. How will you serve the troop for the Fall/Winter term? Anyone interested in SPL or PL should talk with me prior to election, if you have not already done so.
Den Chief is another position within a troop, Den Chief’s assist an assigned den within a Pack rather than directly support a troop. This position has required training, if you are interested please let me know. Sully District is discussing holding training but has no announced date yet.
See the attached updated 893GT Leadership Position description document for a refresher on various positions. Anyone holding a leadership position is expected to attend leadership training to be held 13-15 Sept (interchangeably called Junior Leadership Training or Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops).
Part 2: Emergency Drill. We will work with the 893BT for an emergency drill, this activity helps fulfill requirement 7.a for the Emergency Preparedness merit badge, and should help with the First Class first aid requirement.
Next week – 9/10 – Troop Meeting

Upcoming Service Opportunities
Providing service is a key part of Scouting, to do our daily good turn. Helping others often in turn helps ourselves with new experiences and opportunities for growth. This is built into requirements for most ranks. This section is to list any upcoming service opportunities that may help the Community, and progress in your trail to Eagle, this list is not inclusive and there are many other activities in the area that are also worthwhile. Activities listed here are Scoutmaster approved, if you have other activities you would like to do be sure to check with me if you would like them to count towards scout service requirements.
- CUMC Grace Ministries is a monthly program through our charter organization held on the 2nd Saturday of each month, with prep the Friday night before hand, help is needed at both the Friday set up and on Saturday morning to bring goods to cars
