Scoutmaster Minute: April showers spring rank advancements and new experiences. By all accounts Troop 893’s new scout campout provided multiple learning opportunities of all types, including why we should always pack our rain gear no matter what. The floating flag pole was put to great use, the fish were biting, many enjoyed a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, the campfire program prepared by the Communications MB crew during which we retired several US flags that had fulfilled their duty. The morning brought a little drizzle to make breakdown even more fun…but it all worked out. Special thanks to Adults that drove Scouts out Friday evening or came out Sunday morning for the retrieval mission. The Teet’s property is a special place, we are both grateful and privileged to have this beautiful place as the kickoff camping event for our new scouts.

An individual step in character training is to put responsibility on the individual.

If you haven’t been in the water in awhile, it might be a good idea to go for a visit.  The BSA swim test is located on page 168 of the Handbook in the Aquatics section.  Both Second Class and First Class ranks have aquatics requirements.

  1. 4. Troop 893’s 46th Annual Canoe Trip – May 24-26 (plan ahead)

WHAT:  The Troop’s biggest, most fun-filled event, the 46th Annual Memorial Day Family Canoe Trip, May 24-26, 2019.

WHERE:  South fork of the Shenandoah River, near Bentonville, Virginia with the Downriver Canoe Company.

WHO:  All Troop 893 registered Scouts, former Troop members, all Venturing Crew 893 registered Venturers, their families, and friends.  This is a family event, but because it is also a Scout event, ALCOHOL IS NOT ALLOWED.

Transportation, camping, grubmaster duties, cooking, cleanup, and canoeing or kayaking are done by families (or arranged by families), not by the Troop or by patrols.

WHEN:  Set up camp before nightfall Friday, eat, sleep, canoe, and be home on Sunday evening.  Families may informally meet in the parking lot of CUMC at 5:30 Friday evening (or any other target time you arrange) if you need to go with others.

Registration details will be forthcoming.

LOGISTICS:

Cost

Nights Canoe Kayak
Fri-Sat-Sun $120 $80
Fri-Sat $95 $65
Sat Only $65 $47

NOTE:  Minimum age for kayakers is 14, and if a canoer is under 14, there must be an adult over 18 in the canoe.  No more than three people may occupy a canoe, and the middle person should be small.

  • Camping & Meals

o   We will camp on the Downriver Canoe Company owner’s property very near the launch point for Day 1.

o   Families and/or Patrols may plan to combine efforts for meals. This is great opportunity for Nova Corp Patrol members to fulfill camping nights, meal planning and preparation requirements in coordination with ASM Chritian Wilson. If you haven’t worked with another family on meal planning, then your family must assume that it will do all meal planning, purchase, preparation, and cleanup on its own.

o   Meals to plan include Friday dinner (perhaps on the road), Saturday breakfast, a lunch/snack on the river, dinner, Sunday breakfast, and lunch snack on the river.  Bring money for a meal on the way home.

o   Class B uniforms will be worn while traveling and for Troop assemblies.

o   NO POTABLE WATER IS AVAILABLE AT OUR CAMPSITE.  BRING YOUR OWN ADEQUATE WATER SUPPLY FOR IN CAMP AND ON THE RIVER.

o   This is a Porta-Potty Operation!

  • The River

o   Saturday morning we will canoe about 11 miles to the half-way point (Compton Rapids) and then will be bussed back to the campsite.

o   Sunday, we will be bussed back to Compton Rapids, canoe about 11 more miles to the end point at the Downriver Canoe Company, bussed back to our campsite, break camp and pack up, and depart for home late Sunday afternoon.
